BOSTON, MASS. (Dec. 29, 2021) – The New England Aquarium is welcoming two new members to its Board of Trustees.
At a recent meeting, the trustees voted to add Dr. Robert Chen of the University of Massachusetts Boston’s School for the Environment and Samuel Slater of Tremont Asset Management LLC to the board.
“This is a particularly exciting time to join the New England Aquarium, as we plan for the institution’s long-term future as a leader in ocean conservation efforts,” said Thomas R. Burton III, a Boston-based Mintz attorney who chairs the Board. “We are eager to bring new perspectives to the Board and are thrilled to welcome Bob and Samuel to our ranks.”
The new members bring the Board of Trustees to 24 members. They will hold office for a term of three years.
Dr. Robert “Bob” Chen
Dr. Robert “Bob” Chen is a Professor and Interim Dean of the School for the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston). His research interests include carbon cycling in coastal waters, contaminants in urban harbors, and the application of coastal sensor networks to societal needs. He is also dedicated to ocean and environmental science education and outreach at the local, national, and international levels. He currently serves on the Steering Committee of the Stone Living Lab, a partnership between the City of Boston, UMass Boston, Boston Harbor Now, and other leading organizations to engage scientists and the community in research, education, and the promotion of equity. Dr. Chen holds an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Physics from Harvard University and a PhD in Chemical Oceanography from the University of California, San Diego (Scripps Institution of Oceanography).
Samuel Slater
Samuel Slater was elected to the Board of Ambassadors in 2017. He is a Managing Partner of Tremont Asset Management LLC, the real estate investment arm of Slater Family Holdings. Mr. Slater works in the film industry as Producer and Co-Founder of Burn Later Productions. He is a Partner and serves on the board of the new Seattle Kraken NHL expansion team and the Climate Pledge Arena. Mr. Slater is a Director of the Slater Family Foundation, Overseer at the Boston Children’s Museum, and in 2021 was nominated by President Biden to serve on the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority. He holds a degree in History from George Washington University and an MPA from Suffolk University.
