About
Based primarily in the Aquarium’s Quincy Animal Care Center, Monika Schmück leads the sustainability team in efforts to rear larval fishes and culture planktonic foods. Since the start of the Aquarium’s Larval Program in 2014, Monika and the team have raised over 15 species, five of which had never been successfully aquacultured before. Over 70 percent of the Giant Ocean Tank’s fish population was born and raised at the Aquarium.
Monika is also a species coordinator for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Aquatic Collections Sustainability Committee. Its larval programs support sustainable collections by raising fish for AZA institutions by AZA institutions.
